Description

This small kit bag belonged to Dr. Maybelle Park. Dr. Park was one of the first women physicians in Waukesha. Born in Vernon, WI, she attended Carroll College and then the University of Wisconsin. She earned her medical degree from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, graduating with honors in 1893.
Returning to Waukesha, Dr. Park opened a practice on Broadway Ave., focusing on women and children’s care. She also served as an assistant physician at Waukesha Springs Sanitorium. Alongside her colleague Dr. Margaret Caldwell, Dr. Park helped open the door for future generations of female physicians. Her career accomplishments included : Assistant Medical Inspector for public schools, Seattle WA; first Director of the Juvenile Department, WI; and secretary of the Waukesha Medical Association.
Dr. Park was also a leading voice in the women’s suffrage movement. In 1897 at a meeting in Madison, she gave a paper “Does the Professional Woman Need the Ballot?” Dr. Park was able to exercise her vote from 1920 until her death in 1946.
