Description

Financial services are an important part of a city’s growth and development. Represented here are the First National Bank of Waukesha and Waukesha State Bank. Their still bank, or “piggy” bank, promotions encouraged savings from young, future customers, and offered convenient coin storage.

First National Bank of Waukesha opened in 1855 as the Waukesha County Bank. A century later it became First National Bank, and then the Independence Bank of Waukesha (1980). The bank’s building was located on the Five Points. Slogans included “Time Tried, Tested, and Found Solid” and “100 Years of Sound Banking.”

Waukesha State Bank was founded by Carl Taylor in 1946, and has expanded its service area throughout the county since that time. Ty Taylor, succeeding his father Don Taylor, became president in 2004. Carl was known for his catchphrase, “A Bank is People,” and that guiding principle continues at the “Bank of Friendly Service.”

Personal banking use increased over the 20th century, due in part to confidence in the systems. Banks are either federally or state chartered, and since the 1930’s have provided insurance for their customers through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Similar coverage for building and loan banks is provided through membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank System.
