Description
This press badge belonged to Henry A. Youmans, nephew of the Waukesha Freeman editor Henry M. Youmans, and noted suffragist and journalist, Theodora W. Youmans. As a teen, Henry worked in the “back shop” of the Freeman, sweeping floors and setting type, eventually learning how to run the machinery. After he returned from service in World War I, he continued at the Freeman. In 1930, he was elected President of the corporation, becoming editor and publisher.
The badge was purchased at the well known Estberg’s Jewelers. Founded by Claus Andreas Estberg in 1858, the shop was located for many years in the Putney building at 301 W. Main Street. Estberg’s in the 20th century became an anchor of the Five Points. It sold personalized accessories like this badge, silverware, jewelry, and more. Estberg’s continued to operate after the family sold the business in the mid-1940’s. It closed in 1985. The location is now home to the Picky Picky Resale Shop.
