Description

The Waukesha Mineral Product Company operated in the Dairy Stock Pavilion, the hub of dairy related activity, at 921 Barstow St. It produced feed for cattle, hogs, and poultry. Mineral feed, or fortified feed, was given to livestock in addition to hay and grass, for a more balanced diet. The first decades of the 20th century saw numerous improvements in animal science and veterinary care. Farmers promoted that an improved animal diet led to better quality products: milk, meat, and eggs. Several surrounding dairies produced certified milk in these early decades, and required a controlled herd diet to ensure the milk’s quality. Animal diet and health promotion (free range, grass fed) are still used in food marketing and certification today.
The Waukesha Freeman recorded the business opening with a short notice on Jan. 8, 1926. Carl was incorrectly identified as Harvey. While the Waukesha Mineral Products Company only operated for a few years, other companies, including the Waukesha Products Corporation, continued to provide mineral and fortified feed.
