Description

These fluted aluminum molds were promotional items for “Jiffy Jell,” the flagship products of the Waukesha Pure Food Company. The molds, which were available in various shapes, were offered, for a nominal shipping fee, in a national promotion encouraging housewives to try this ‘new’ dessert product. Another publicity opportunity came when a train car of Jiffy Jell was sent to France during World War I. Seen in the photograph here the car was surrounded by the women work force of Jiffy Jell.

The Waukesha Pure Food Company was founded by brothers Fred and Otis Glidden. In 1916 the business moved to Elizabeth St. in the city. Jiffy Jell was one of the first gelatin desserts on the market, originally available in six flavors: raspberry, strawberry, cherry, orange, lemon, and lime. The flavoring extract came in a small glass vial and contained alcohol. This became an issue during Prohibition. Due to sugar shortages and problems with the formula, business floundered by 1921. Jiffy Jell was sold to the Genesee Pure Food Co., the makers of Jell-O.
