Description

Remembered here is Capt. George Knipfel, who retired from the Waukesha Police department in 1935. The Waukesha Police Department has grown from a handful of patrolmen to more than 100 sworn officers and a support staff. The fleet of vehicles has expanded as well from a 1927 Jewet Sedan and 3 Harley Davidson Motorcycles, to 16 marked and 26 unmasked vehicles today. Although a police chief was appointed shortly after the city’s incorporation in 1896, the state did not require cities to have police or fire commissions until 1910. Waukesha’s commission was based in a second story office at the Five Points until a dedicated Police Station at 130 Delafield St. was built in 1937. A new facility was built in 1992 at 1901 Delafield.

The Waukesha Citizen’s Police Academy was established in 1995 to provide community members opportunities to learn from and interact with local law enforcement. It also sponsors community events including “Run With the Cops” and “Waukesha Night Out” to raise funds for the department.
