Description

Dale Chevrolet sponsored a women’s fast-pitch softball team in the 1940s during WWII. They were coached by Chuck Heyer, athletic director of Carroll College. Games were played at night under the lights of the Buchner Park baseball diamond. Amateur teams were formed throughout the region. The Dale Chevrolet team women carpooled to the out-of-town games, in Watertown, Whitewater, Fond du Lac, and Lake Geneva.

The uniforms they wore consisted of red satin shirts and red gabardine pants, red and black jackets, and red caps. The front of the shirt features the identifying Waukesha “W” with “Dale Chevrolet” embroidered on the back. This jersey also includes the name of the donor “Bernie,” embroidered on the front.

Although the All American Girls Professional Baseball League looms large in our public imagination, it would not have been possible without the talent pool of local women’s softball teams. It was in the 1930’s that an underhand fast-pitch style gained popularity, and recreational leagues began forming in communities.
