Shopping bags, assorted

Subject

Disposable paper and plastic shopping bags

Description

Downtown Waukesha has been home to hundreds of shops and businesses. The Five Points intersection of Main, Broadway and Grand offered a central point that anchored the business corridor on the south side of the river. This collage of shopping bags represents a fraction of the merchants who operated in Waukesha during the late 20th century, including:

Fredrick’s Hallmark, Main Street Michaels, Main St
Kline’s, Grand Avenue Savage and Martin, Broadway
Johnson Hills, Grand Avenue Style Shop, Grand Avenue
Laing’s, Main Street Zillmers, South Street
Martha Merrells, 231 Main Street

Many people alive today remember the hustle and bustle of the downtown in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was so busy that a policeman was posted on the Five Points to control traffic. The opening of Brookfield Square signaled the end of Waukesha as a prime shopping destination in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Through the determination of artists and new restaurant owners, Waukesha was reborn. Visitors were encouraged to “Get Lost in the Charm of Downtown Waukesha.”
