Description

There have been numerous sports leagues in Waukesha, including the Business Men’s League, which awarded Johnnie’s Shoe Shine’s team this trophy in 1959. At the time, Johnnie’s was located at 348 West Main Street, although the shop had several locations over the years.
Bowling took off in Wisconsin during the 20th century with the American Bowling Congress (ABC) headquartered in Milwaukee for a century from 1908 - 2008. Waukesha was no exception to the popularity of the sport. As one 1983 Waukesha Freeman article summarized: “However difficult the times or tight the dollar, people in this corner of Wisconsin will never do without two pastimes - bowling and beer drinking.”

Bowling was imported by English, German, and Dutch immigrants. At first, alleys were connected with taverns or private fraternal lodges. Early Clubs having bowling lanes were the Elks Lodge on Wisconsin Ave. and the league of American Wheelmen on Main St. (Nickell Building). By 1959, Waukesha was home to three dedicated bowling alleys: Fracaro’s Lanes at 1430 White Rock, Waukesha Bowling Center at 226 Madison, and Sparks’ Bowl at 716 Clinton. By 1990, it was home to six, adding Foxx View Bowling Lanes at 2440 W. Sunset, Red Carpet Lanes at 901 Northview, and Sunset Bowl Family Center at 333 W. Sunset. Although league play has declined in recent years, Foxx View Bowling is still home to Waukesha’s USBC Bowling Association and maintains the Waukesha US Bowling Congress Hall of Fame.
