Description
The Waukesha Early Risers Kiwanis Club sponsored an exciting fund-raising event in downtown Waukesha. The Kiwanis Kar Classic involved local industries, businesses, organizations and civic groups sponsoring a “car” in the race. For a $900 entry fee, the group was responsible for assembling a pit crew, arranging drivers and painting a logo on the car. The event also helped city football programs, whose members helped set up and dismantle the race course with three semi trucks full of old tires. Each team received a donation for their work. Twelve races were held on race day with each car participating in at least three heats. An awards banquet was held after the event.
At its height, 30 teams competed, raising more than $10,000 yearly for the D.A.R.E. program which helped educate children about the dangers of drug abuse. As interest and participation declined, the event was eventually cancelled, but provided many years of community involvement, benefit, and entertainment.
