Description
These 25 pound tins contained HEMO plain and chocolate flavor malted milk made by the Thompson’s Malted Milk Company. Other products included Malted Food (dietary supplement for growing children), Malted Beef Peptone, Hemo Malted Milk, and Double Malted Milk. Each tub also included recipe tips and ideas for both hot and cold preparations such as Hot Malted Milk Bouillon and Malted Milk Ice Cream. Malted milk is dried milk combined with enrichments like cereal grain, proteins, and hemoglobin.
It was sold as a highly nutritious supplement, originally marketed for babies.
Thompson’s Malted Milk Company was founded on July 14, 1909, by Livingston A. Thompson, a patent attorney. The original factory was on Clybourn Street in Milwaukee. After encouragement from Waukesha city and business leaders, Thompson’s moved to Waukesha. Other incentives included moving nearer to dairy farms in the county and access to a good water supply. Twenty pounds of pure spring water was used in the production of one pound of malted milk. In 1918, Thompson’s purchased Waukesha Health Products Co., a manufacturer of products for diabetics. In 1928, Borden’s Malted Milk Co. purchased Thompson’s and continued manufacturing under the brand name.
