Description

This double-balance scale was used by the Biology Department of Carroll University during the 1960’s. Dr. Bruce MacIntyre, who donated the scale, is a 1963 Carroll graduate, who became a Biology Professor from 1968 to 2005.

The oldest four year institution in Wisconsin, the school was chartered in 1846. The school name adapted over time from Prairieville Academy, to Carroll College, and finally Carroll University. Academic offerings expanded significantly in the 20th century to include education, government, economics, and nursing. The Carroll Players, formed by May Nickell Rankin in 1896, is the oldest student drama club in the state. Notably, Prof. Rankin trained Alfred Lunt whose acting style and career helped reshape American Theater in the 20th century.

The Campus today includes numerous historic buildings, restored by Carroll for academic and student services as well as new construction for a growing study body: from 5 enrolled students in 1846 to an enrollment of 3,480 today. Recent expansions have added the Michael and Mary Jaharis Science Laboratories and new student housing Prairie, Frontier, and Pioneer Halls.
