Title
Fire Department jack and hose clamp
Subject
Civic & Government
Description
The hose clamp tool was purchased by the Waukesha Fire Department for use with its first motorized fire truck, a 1915 Sterling. It was patented by the Peter Pirsch & Sons Co. of Kenosha on September 5, 1905. It was used to clamp off a hose line in order to change a nozzle, or to take out or add in a length of hose. It could also be used to force a door open. It was carried on an engine and later a ladder truck until about 1980.
The Cooper Hose Jacket was patented on April 4, 1894 and acquired by the Waukesha Fire Department in the early 1900’s. It was used as a “band aid” for a leaking hose or a defective hose coupling. Because fire hose threads were not standard between departments for much of the 20th century, another use was to couple hoses from different fire departments together. It was carried on an engine and later a ladder truck until about 1980.
