Description

This promotional sign features one of the longest running American trademarks, the winged nymph Psyche. A painting, “Psyche at Nature’s Mirror” by Paul Thumann, displayed at the 1893 Chicago Exhibition caught the attention of White Rock’s owners, who purchased the rights to the painting.
The White Rock Mineral Spring Co. operated in Waukesha from 1871 - 1970. Located along the Fox River north of the city, the water was renowned originally for curative powers. Opened by Hiram M. Clover, the spring property included nearly 50 acres of land.
News reports record Friday evening “festas” (dances), and a steamship service departing from Barstow Bridge transport visitors along the Fox River to the spring grounds. Bottling and shipping the spring water nationally and internationally became a key strategy by the early 1880’s. White Rock’s product range went on to include flavored sodas, ginger ale, Corrinis water, Saz-Rock Sarsaparilla, Q-9, and Kentucky Nip.
Psyche has been modernized several times to reflect the ideals of the time. Her transformation was featured in a 1947 Life magazine article. Psyche is still used today by the New York based company.
