Title

Korean War Uniform

Subject

This jacket belonged to Major William Dehnel, who served alongside 900 others from the county in the Korean War.

Following World War II American and Soviet forces divided Korea along the 58th parallel. Although both withdrew their forces, the well equipped North Korean army crossed the border in June 1950. Waukesha servicemen still stationed in Japan, mobilized for a new conflict that would last until 1953.

The conflict was the first test of the balance of power between the United States and Soviet Union, under the new international framework of the United Nations established in 1945. For servicemen and women the Korean War became a series of stalemates and halted negotiations that saw little advancement beyond reclaiming the 58th parallel.

The Korean War is often called the “forgotten war.” It is overshadowed by both its predecessor World War II and the subsequent conflicts of the Cold War era.
