Description
TMER&L - or The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company, emerged in 1896, in the wake of the economic crisis of 1893-95. Electric rail, also referred to as interurban or light rail, sought to replace horse-drawn trolley while also extending electric service lines. Typically, subsidiary business constructed new routes that were then absorbed by the larger company.
Collected here are some of the schedules for the TMER&L, and other rail services lines that came in and out of Waukesha. Popular electric rail routes included service to Waukesha Beach at Pewaukee Lake and the Muskego Beach Line. The line also served commuters heading east from Waukesha to industry and office jobs.
The rise of automobile ownership and increased bus service led to a decline in ridership. Coupled with several accidents in 1950, the last light rail (Speedrail) in Waukesha ran on June 30, 1951.
