Description

Plowshare, a fair trade shop, first opened in 1990 and has become a fixture of the downtown shopping corridor. The shop provides a marketplace for Waukeshonians to connect with global artisans. Plowshare works through the Fair Trade Federation to help assure their vendors are operating under fair trade principles.

The community members behind Plowshare first created the Waukesha Center for Peace and Justice in 1989, with an interest in building a more peaceful and just world. The group quickly set a goal of opening a fair trade shop in the city. Building on the larger fair trade movement of the later 20th century, Plowshare brings a global perspective to a local shopping experience.

Plowshare also sponsors peace education initiatives throughout the community to further their mission. They can be seen during Art Crawls, Friday Night Live, and at the Farmers Market promoting the shop and their mission. Today the shop works with more than 42 vendors globally, supporting women’s cooperatives, fair labor practices, and building a locally inspired and globally conscious community.
